The More NASCAR “Thinks” the Dumber I Get

posted in Commentary, NASCAR |

Play-Doh HQNASCAR is considering creating a reward for the winner of the “regular season” in response to the huge points lead Jeff Gordon built before the Chase for the championship.

Excuse me but… this is where I really get dumb!

‘Cause all along stupid me thought the Chase was not only designed to create “tension,” “drama” and “piss your pants excitement” to the very end of the new-fangled Chase playoffs, but also provide an environment where a run-away points leader lost his run-away lead.

But now the deep thinkers in Charlotte’s NASCAR Ivory Tower want to mitigate some of the gains made that allegedly created “tension,” “drama” and “piss your pants excitement.”

They want to award the “regular season” winner with some kinda somethin’. Like awarding additional bonus points to be used in Chase seeding, more prize money or a trophy different from the Nextel Cup. (Ah… shouldn’t that be Sprint Cup, we are talkin’ 2008 and why do I smell corporate sponsorship?)

Can we rightfully call this Junior Induced Rules Change II?

Or is it Jeffy Rules Change I, considering PCNA and Jim Bobblehead Hunter are taking their cue from Gordon:

“If I didn’t know what the rules were going into the season, I’d say we got the shaft. But that’s not the case,” Gordon said. “Ever since they’ve had the Chase, they’ve said what it is. But I do think they’re going to have to revisit now, going back.

“If you’re going to have incentives for guys to win races, you have to have some kind of incentive for a guy to go out there and be the points leader at that point. I wouldn’t be surprised if they revisit that a little bit.”

Where does it stop I ask?

What’s next “incentives” given for the team that’s in 35th points position at the end of the regular season and the Chase?

Someone needs to remind these boneheads the sage words of Bobby Unser, “Nobody remembers who finished second but the guy who finished second.”

Or 13th, or 35th. Or 1st after race 26 then you totally suck and finish the year in 10th. In NASCAR there is one winner and 42 losers, sorry that’s just the way it is.

PLEASE someone buy a years supply of Play-Doh for these idiots. Maybe a year making green clay pizzas and blue clay elephants will keep them from tweaking something else.

    I dunno Marc.

According to Mike Helton, and I got the pictures to prove it, this exact scenario did come up when they considered the current format.

Mike wasn’t convinced they would touch it any time soon. Why tweak it every year, and further dilute the meaning of being the Champion?

They may touch it in time, but unless it’s an “emergency”, I don’t expect to see any real change for a few more years. Then again, never say never with them folks down in Florida.

Don’t argue with me, if I say I’m getting dumber just leave it alone.

I’m sorry Luke this makes no sense to me. They make the Chase to eliminate large points leads and create drama.

Now if they do as they are fantasizing they want to reward the guy in first because, OMG they took away his large points lead.

Screw that, someone make up their frigin’ mind for them.

And screw whiny little Jeffy while were at it.

Well, I wasn’t arguing the fact your IQ seems to be shrinking as fast as your propeller. :D
Though, the more they screw with it, the more they dilute the value and symbolism of the Cup. That’s the problem I see. You end up with 15 different comparisons as to who the champion shoulda/woulda/coulda been, vice who it ends up being.

Not to mention the value of multiple Championships has now been diluted as well. At least for the time being. Such may be the price of replacing a points system that had served it’s fans well for so long.

Oh, and I didn’t know you were that kinda guy! I bet Ingrid might have have a few things to say about that one. ;)

There’s tweaking the system to keep the series relevant and competitive. Then there’s screwing the pooch to (try to) make everyone happy.

But, you ain’t ever going to make everyone happy.

This is how we got blue ribbons in schools for everyone who participates in a contest. Let’s not leave anyone out.

And I’m with Marc. Screw Jeffy - probably my least favorite NASCAR driver.

Don’t even remind me about things handed out in school. Here in the P.I I had to put up with a 3 hour Grad ceremony for a kindergartener, complete with cap & gown.

BTW, what’s the matter bored without your “Wizbang fix?” :-)

Oh, I think Wizbang was back online. Sometimes it just gets tiresome battling trolls, day in and day out.

Plus, trying to give a shipmate some traffic. And I do like NASCAR, so…

It’s just ridiculous these days. Kindergarten, sixth grade, eighth grade - they all go overboard. Went to an eighth grade ceremony a few years ago. Some of the kids were wearing tuxedos and evening gowns!

I wanted to scream out, “It’s the 8th grade you morons!”
